We will need to cut at least a 2-inch by 6-inch sample from your finished good or rolled fabric to conduct a burn test. This is typically taken from the back of the side or bottom hem, at the top pocket, or from another area specified by the client.
For previously treated or IFR (Inherently Flame Retardant) fabrics, if the sample passes, you will be issued a certificate.
For fabrics that have not previously been treated, we will conduct a treat and burn test on at least a 2-inch by 6-inch sample before treating the entire piece. This is to ensure that the proper chemical is used, that there is no significant change in the look, color, or feel of the fabric, and that we yield a passing result.
Once our testing is complete, we will treat the entire item and issue a certificate.
All items are treated with our Flamexx or Flame Guardian flame retardants that are manufactured at our warehouse in Leonia, NJ. Visit our flame retardants page where you'll find more information, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and Technical Data Sheets (SDS) for each product.
Our flame retardants are non-toxic, contain 0% VOCs, and most products are halogen-free.
Though we have seen minimal changes in some fabric types, most treated fabrics don’t change color. There is also a slight change in hand. If you would like before and after samples of your fabric, you should provide additional fabric for us to treat that can be mailed to you for approval. The cost of shipping will be added to your testing/treatment invoice.
If you have very sensitive skin, or are allergic to salt, you may have a slight skin reaction when handling the treated fabric. Our technicians and most clients handle treated items without issue. If you are using our product to treat your own items, we recommend wearing gloves during application.
As our chemical is water-based, washing your treated item will wash out the chemical, voiding the certificate. If you clean your item, it must be retreated and certified.
We offer a wide range of products that can be used on wood, cotton, polyester, faux foliage, and most fabric blends. Visit our Flame Retardants page to view our selection of products.
Yes, we treat decorative throw rugs. We cannot treat installed carpet.
We treat wardrobe/costumes used in many shows that have an open flame. Call us to discuss your production's needs.
We can test your IFR fabric/soft goods and provide a certificate. IFR fabric is a type of fabric that is fire retardant without the need for treatment. IFR fabrics are made with threads that meet fire code standards, and they are expected to remain flame retardant for the life of the fabric, even after repeated washing. If we test your IFR items and they fail, they will likely need cleaning to restore the efficacy of the IFR qualities.
If you use our product to treat your items, we would have to test your items if you want us to certify them. We cannot issue a certificate for any item that we have not treated or tested.
Products are available in 1-gallon bottles, 5-gallon pails, or 55 gallon drums. Our paint additive is also available in 8 oz. bottles.
There are directions for use on each product label. They can also be found on each product page in our online shop. You may need to use a sprayer with a fine spray nozzle. Search "manual pump sprayer" on sites like Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe's.
Our Flamexx and Flame Guardian products are non-toxic. There may be a slight odor present during and for about 15 minutes after treatment. Most clients report no odor during and after treatment. Students, faculty, and guests may remain in the room during treatment, and enter just after treatment. We just ask that the immediate area around what we are treating is clear of people.
Our Flamexx and Flame Guardian products are non-toxic. There may be a slight odor present during and for about 15 minutes after treatment. Most clients report no odor during and after treatment, except for the product that we use for artificial foliage. If we are treating your artificial foliage, you will be able to smell the chemical for up to 2 hours after application. While our products are non-toxic, your staff and guests may experience an unpleasant odor if they remain in the space.
All furniture should be removed from the immediate treatment area. Our technicians will not move furniture or other items. Restaurants should move all tables and chairs away from the treatment area, and either remove or cover tables that may be pre-set with glasses, dinnerware, and flatware.
In some cases, we will need to leave paper on the ground to catch dripping fire retardant. The technician will inform you if it must stay behind. In this case, you will be responsible for removing the paper.
The duration of our onsite visit varies depending on the size of the job, and the amount of time it take us to prepare the area we are treating in. In general, testing can take 30-60 minutes, and treatment can take 60 minutes or more from the beginning of prep to the end of treatment.
Our standard turnaround time is 1-2 weeks from receipt of your items. During the months of July through October, our turnaround time is 3-4 weeks from receipt of your items. If you are in a bind timewise, you should always call to see if we can complete your project sooner than our standard turnaround times.
