Our History

In 1998 Turning Star was founded in Brooklyn, NY with the goal of simplifying flame retardant process for theatre professionals. Many came because they were encountering fire prevention codes for the first time. We soon gained a reputation for providing excellent guidance and customer service. Our circle of clients grew from the just the theater world to film, tv, music, with artists in many mediums, including interior designers and architects.

Our small staff of two full-time people continued to grow, and in 2006 we moved from our small 1,200 sq ft location in Prospect Heights to a 5,000 sq ft 2 story building in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. Part of the second floor was removed to allow hanging curtains up to 28′ high, and expand the manufacturing area.

By 2009, more than 60% of our customer base was outside the NYC tri-state area. We began looking for a larger location in New Jersey, to accommodate larger projects with a faster processing time, and still service our long-time customers in the NYC area.

In 2012 we moved to our current home in Leonia, NJ. Custom-built systems for drapes and fabric rolls allow us to treat twice as much material in nearly half the time. We also were able to expand the space for raw materials, product manufacturing and storage, as well as testing and development facilities.

We’ve come a long way from our theatrical roots, and now work with industrial manufacturers of textiles and finished upholstery, as well as millworkers, event planners, and hotel managers. Now in it’s 16th year of business, Turning Star continues to be a valuable resource for artists and production managers of every field.
